To determine the compatibility between circuit breakers and switching power supplies, one can follow four steps: parameter matching, characteristic verification, compliance inspection, and practical testing. These steps cover the entire process from the selection phase to on-site operation, fully meeting the practical needs of electrical supply chain selection.
- Voltage level alignment: The rated operating voltage of the circuit breaker must fully cover the input voltage range of the switching power supply. For example, for a switching power supply with an AC220V input, a circuit breaker with a rated voltage of ≥AC230V should be selected. It is strictly prohibited to use a circuit breaker with a voltage specification lower than the upper limit of the power supply input.
- Rated current matching: First, calculate the steady-state input current of the power supply based on the load power. The rated current of the circuit breaker should have a safety margin of 1.1 to 1.5 times. For conventional industrial control scenarios, a 1.2-times margin is recommended. For heavy-load multi-power supply parallel scenarios, the margin should be increased to 1.5 times to avoid overheating and tripping during long-term operation.
The rated short-circuit breaking capacity of the circuit breaker must be greater than the maximum expected short-circuit current on the input side of the switching power supply, ensuring that the circuit breaker can reliably break the circuit in case of an internal short circuit in the power supply, without the risk of welding or explosion.
- Anti-start-up surge verification: Check the amplitude (typically 10 to 20 times the rated input current) and duration (mostly in the millisecond range) of the power-on surge current of the switching power supply. The instantaneous tripping threshold of the circuit breaker needs to avoid this surge. The conventional Type C MCB has an instantaneous tripping range of 5 to 10In, which can accommodate most common switching power supplies. In scenarios where the surge current is relatively high, a Type D circuit breaker (with a tripping range of 10 to 20In) should be selected to avoid false tripping upon power-on.
The overcurrent and short-circuit protection response time of the switching power supply itself is usually ≤0.1s. The tripping action time of the circuit breaker needs to be set slightly longer than the protection response time of the power supply, to ensure that the power supply triggers self-protection first when a fault occurs. In extreme faults, the circuit breaker acts as a backup protection measure, avoiding the simultaneous triggering of both protections that could lead to the expansion of the fault scope.
When multiple switching power supplies are operating in parallel, it is necessary to calculate the total instantaneous inrush current when all power supplies are started simultaneously. The instantaneous tripping threshold of the circuit breaker must be greater than this total inrush value to prevent batch false operation of the circuit breaker when multiple power supplies are powered on simultaneously.
High-power molded case/frame circuit breakers must possess EMC test reports as required by Appendix J of IEC 60947-2. All switching power supplies must meet the mandatory EMC requirements of IEC 61204-3, ensuring that in the same electromagnetic environment, the circuit breaker will not malfunction/fail to operate due to high-frequency harmonics and transient spikes in the power supply.
- Immunity index alignment: The electrostatic discharge, electrical fast transient burst, and surge immunity levels of circuit breakers and switching power supplies need to be consistent. For example, in industrial-grade scenarios, both must meet the level 3 or higher immunity specified in IEC 61000-4 to avoid a decrease in overall system stability due to insufficient immunity in one of them.
- Power-on surge test: With the load, power on and off the circuit breaker 10 times in succession. The circuit breaker should not trip falsely. Record the surge current waveform for each power-on to confirm that it is always below the instantaneous tripping threshold of the circuit breaker.
- Fault simulation test: Simulate power output overload and output short-circuit conditions respectively, to confirm that the power supply triggers its own protection first and the circuit breaker does not actuate; then simulate a short circuit on the power input side, to confirm that the circuit breaker can reliably disconnect without abnormal heating or welding.
- Long-term load aging test: After operating continuously at full load for 72 hours, monitoring the temperature rise of the circuit breaker contacts and the fluctuation of the power supply input current, and ensuring no abnormal tripping or false protection triggering caused by electromagnetic interference throughout the process, it can be determined that the two are fully compatible.
